The digital clock beside Anna's bed clicked to read 5:24. It was the only sound in the room on Friday evening and broke the teenager's attention. Lifting her eyes from the psychology book she had been attempting to study, her eyebrows shot up. It was movie night - she had completely forgotten!
One glance down at her clothing made her face lose a shade. She was only in her bra and underwear; and, though it had become a typical outfit for Anna when she wasn't being disturbed, it was definitely not suiting for when Cass was coming over. Definitely not.
With a tiny yelp of distress, Anna hopped off her bed and dashed to the closet. Flinging open the door she hurriedly looked through all of her clothes, pushing hanger after hanger to the left and right in attempt to find something decent. She finally pulled out a pair of black lounge pants and a plain white t-shirt. Comfort, she thought to herself with a nod.
As soon as she pulled the shirt over her head and pulled her hair out of the back, Anna heard a knock at her door. If that wasn't perfect timing, she didn't know what was. She made a detour to her bed and scooped up the psychology book and tossed it on her desk.
With that done and the rest of the room reasonably neat, Anna pranced to her door. Opening it just enough to peek through the tiniest slit, she raised an eyebrow at her friend. "May I help you?" she asked in a teasing voice before opening the door completely and ushering him in.

Cass flashed Anna a grin as he stepped through the dorm door, breathing a "hey pidge" over the fringes of the brown grocery bag he was hugging to his body with one arm. He paused a moment to scuff his shoes off by the door, setting his bag on the floor for a moment while he shirked off his jacket and slung it from a hook in the wall on his left. Scooping the bag up again, he swayed further into the dorm, glancing around as if he were looking for something. "I'm a little late I guess," he was saying, sounding distracted.
Great.
Cass spied a microwave on a folding table. Just a microwave. He hadn't been away from Rutherford more than four months and it already slipped his mind that dorm rooms, unlike their kindred apartments, don't have kitchens. Peeking into his bag, he sighed––Now what? Inside the bag were the ingredients for his mom's spaghetti––he'd even called her up earlier to get the recipe. He was going to make it for her, you know, try to be a little more charming than usual. But making spaghetti required a stove, a stove of which he was tragically denied.
Swallowing his pride and vowing to come up with something, he plopped the bag on the table. Plan B, Cass told himself, and turned to face her, hands gripping the tabletop as he leaned back against it. "So pidgeon, what movie did you have in mind for tonight?"

Her eyebrows arched curiously at the grocery bag her friend carried in with him, but she didn't bother to ask what it was. She guessed it was some crazy sort of snack -- licorice or taffy, for all she knew. Then again, Anna had an enormous stash of laffy taffy beneath her bed. It was her weakness, strangely enough.
Dismissing the thought, she closed the door behind Cass. She frowned and shook her head, tossing a glance at the digital clock by her bed. 5:31. "If you are counting the seconds, then yes. But I'm not mad at you, so no worries," she said, sticking her tongue out at him and making her way over to the television.
Pidgeon. It was the pet name he had come up with for her. She was so accustomed to it now that she didn't even pass a second thought before responding to it. It came naturally. Falling to her knees in front of the tiny entertainment center, Anna pulled open the doors and leaned back, examining her DVD collection. She nibbled her lip as her pale blue eyes scanned the selection, wondering what might suit them both. "Ooh, do you like Sweet Home Alabama?" Her tone was practically breathless with the new-found excitement. She had completely forgotten the movie was even in her collection.
Pulling it carefully out of the pile, Anna jumped to her feet and pranced over to Cass, lifting it up as though she was Vanna White herself. "You know you want to," she said in a sing-song tone, offering him a playful pout.

A smile tickled at his lips and dimpled at the corners as she contradicted his claim that he was late, glancing at the clock beyond her for himself. Cass's eyebrows lifted in disbelief as he remarked in a low, jesting tone, "I'm surprised you're never late for class... that clock has to be slow. And knowing how long you take to doll up––"
But Anna paid him no mind to him and was daintily kneeling down to scour her DVD collection for a movie. Cass remained where he was, tilting his head back and casually glancing around. Apparently Anna had the whole place to herself, which he imagined was divine. He had to share his room with a pothead who stayed up late (when he was actually spending the night in their room) masturbating to stuff on his laptop. It was also plenty roomy in her room, as opposed to his, which led him to assume that she had some good money backing her on campus stay at Rutherford. Cass had a fleeting moment of envy, but it subsided quickly when Anna bounced up from the floor and waved the movie she picked out. For several seconds he was too busy admiring the naïve, spontaneously sweet expression on her face––at least, until his dark eyes also registered the title in her hand.
Oh God.
Cass stared hard at the DVD case Anna held out to him, squinting and affecting a look of 'reluctant maybe' instead of a right out wince. Chick flicks didn't normally fly with him, but who knew; Sweet Home Alabama sounded close enough to Tenessee... it could teach him a thing or two. Although sincerely doubting this, Cass perked a smile and plucked the case from her fingertips to give it a look over that was entirely convincing. Reese Witherspoon and some scruffy stud on the back. Good lord, is that Patrick Dempsey?
Lowering the case with a short groan and a teasing roll of his eyes, he tossed it back to her. "Sure, put it in pidge," he consented

"We can pick a different one," she said solemnly in response to his reaction. She took the case back from him, turning it over and letting her eyes trace the back once more as she chewed her lip. Anna was not one to argue - far from it. Of course, she did want to see the film again but she didn't want to put Cass through an hour and a half of misery. However, when he consented and agreed to watch it with her, she perked up and happily made her way towards the television. Like before, she was not one to argue.
Kneeling in front of the television and pressing the power button on her DVD player, Anna tilted her head towards Cass. With eyes still focused on the anxious arrival of the red 'on' light, she asked, "What is in that bag you brought?" Her blue eyes flickered from her friend to the bag still sitting behind him on the table.

"It's your pick tonight," he argued, crossing his arms and giving her a stern look. "I'll make you watch some subtitled foreign film with me next Saturday." His last words had barely fallen from his lips and she was already busying herself with the DVD player. When she crouched down, her tee tugged up a little bit, exposing a small glimpse of her lower back. Intrigued, Cass tilted his head and leaned back more comfortably against the table.
"What is in that bag you brought?" she was talking to him now, looking at him. Hastily, Cass averted his gaze and gave himself a mental brush off as if to wipe off crumbs of guilty pleasure. He then reached back to protectively rumple the top of the bag shut. "You'll found out later," he promised with a wink and a grin.
As soon as Anna got it past the previews and to the menu, Cass pushed away from the table and sauntered casually over to the well-worn loveseat. It was green, or more of had been green––things had a tendency to change colour after use by college students––and appeared to have been forcefully wedged into that corner. Either way, Cass was impressed as he reclined into it, busy musing the story behind its presence in Anna's dorm. It looked like it had been filched from the game room downstairs.
Once Anna sat down next to him, the loveseat's origins ceased to concern the young actor. Cass flirted her a quick smile, but it just seemed to skirt over her notice, like a cloud over the countryside. Disappointed and slightly perplexed, he settled deeper into the couch and prepared himself for the gaudiest opening scene he had sat through in a long time.

The young actress grimaced dramatically at Cass's words. She adored her evenings with him but watching foreign films was not exactly her idea of pleasant. It was bearable, but definitely not her cup of tea. Nevertheless, that was how movie nights went. Anna picked out a film one week while Cass made his selection the next. It was how it had always been, and probably would continue to be.
She lifted her eyebrows quizzically when he pushed the top of the bag. "You're so protective of it, I'm almost afraid to find out what it is," she said with a mock glare. She laughed when he grinned - it must be something he was proud of, whatever that might be. Changing her glance once more to the television, Anna skipped chapter after chapter of previews before finally reaching the main menu. With a satisfied smile she scooped up the remote and made her way to sit by Cass on the worn-green loveseat sitting in the corner.
One glance at Cass and his blasé appearance made Anna throw him a look of mildly entertained frustration. "Come on," she said, giving him a fun-loving nudge on the shoulder. "I don't make that face when I watch your crazy films." Anna raised an eyebrow at him before flickering her attention back to the television screen. "This is a wonderful movie and you just don't want to admit it," she said in a matter-of-fact tone. A tiny grin played on her lips but she did her best to conceal her quiet humour with the situation.
