Amber watched as the world passed her by. Sitting on a soft patch of grass in the farthest possible location from the little park, Amber watched the going ons of everything with longing plastered all over her face. It seemed that everyone had somebody. Everyone but her. There, in the far distance, at the park she could see families playing, children would laugh as well as their parents. Amber had no memory of ever going to the park with her own mother. Than there were those closer to her, the teenagers. All of them only a little younger than herself, some even looked around her age, and all of them happy with large smiles. Some were with friends, others with lovers. Amber had never hung out at the park with either.
This was an odd ocasion for Amber. Usually she didn't care one way or the other, but, for some reason, she hated being alone right now. Usually she'd purposely keep herself away from people, purposely hurt them so she wouldn't have to worry about them trying to talk to her, and do things with her, or get attatched to her. But, right now she wished beyond anything else she had never done any of that. She wished she hadn't made herself so hard to like. She wished she would let people love her.

Dylan sighed. It seemed he was spending way too much time outdoors lately, especially during the cold weather. The spring-summer season was his favourite. There was nothing nicer then being outside on a nice day, surrounded by those you cared for, although lately with the school year and his somewhat sullen moods, the list of people he cared for and those who cared for him was slowly declining. He hadn’t seen his sister in a couple weeks, and they lived relatively close together. He was trying to spend time with Blair, get to know her and be her friend, lame maybe that he wanted to be friends with his sister, but their relationship at this point basically consists of Dylan yelling at her for being a slut, and Blair yelling back to mind his own business. He hates that it’s gotten to that point and was trying very hard to reverse it.
He strolled among the trees of the park, a cigarette between his lips. It was a dirty habit, and he knew it, hell he’d even quit awhile ago, but recently the habit had come back. He told himself that if he had quit once, he could do it again, but as the sense of calm that came with the rush of nicotine, Dylan came to the realization that it would probably be harder. However, he could be addicted to much worse things, so, he kept on puffing.
Brushing back his hair, he ticked off the end of his smoke and pulled up his pants. They were a light wash pair, that were slightly baggy on the slim boy. He hardly ever wore them for that reason, but like always he was behind on laundry and didn’t think his brown cords could survive another day, plus they went nicely with the navy blue long sleeve shirt, and black blazer style jacket. His old familiar pair of black and white checkered vans were on his feet.
Dylan was in the midst of contemplating what he was actually doing here in the park, when he had laundry as well as countless other needless jobs to complete, when he noticed a girl sitting by herself. He was never one to intrude in other people’s business, but couldn’t help but feel intrigued. There was something about her… she just looked, lonely. He himself had been dealing with those types of feelings, although he wasn’t necessarily lonely in the traditional sense. He just felt incomplete and recent bout of writer’s block was contributing to it. So, feeling like the good citizen he was, he made his way over to her, throwing his cigarette away as he did so, and came up beside her. Still standing, he opened his mouth, hoping she wouldn’t take him as a big huge creep.
”The city’s gorgeous this time of year, isn’t it?”

Amber looked up, surprised by the voice. She hadn't heard anyone walking around, though that might have been because she wasn't listening for anyone. She had been paying to close attention to the children playing in the park, remembering her own childhood, nothing like theirs. She adverted her eyes, hoping that the man didn't think she was some sort of creep staring at little kids. Of course, on second thought she hardly cared. He was the one who had just randomly walked up to her and started talking.
"Is it really though?" Amber replied. She was the kind of person who would look for flaws in beauty, it was what she loved to do.
She looked over to the man, trying to size him up. Was he another one of those snobby college student nights? She wasn't sure, but he certainly didn't look like money was a problem. However, unexpectedly she smelt smoke from him, something she had no trouble with. She herself was an avid smoker, and the scent brought out a sudden craving for a cigarette. So, she pulled out her pack, which was ever present, and took out a cigarette and lite it.
"It looks grimy and washed-out through the smoke." she added after breathing out. She realized she'd probably freaked him out, like everyone else. Unlike usually, though, she didn't feel the same uncaringness as always, she felt lonely and wanted someone. Amber had to tear her mind away from the thought as she had been the one to box herself up alone in the first place, there was no going back now.

Dylan shifted his weight from one foot to the other and leaned back against a tree that was slightly in front of where the girl was sitting. Random conversations with people he didn’t know were not something he was used to, but for some reason he just felt like talking to someone today. All his introverted ways were being replaced with the desire for someone new. The familiarity of his life lately was enough to drive him crazy and with that he raised an eyebrow, frowning down at the girl. It wasn’t a rude frown, more like a “think what you want” kind of look. ”Yah, I would say it is,” the city was Dylan’s favourite thing and even if it didn’t look beautiful, the quirks and anticts that went on were unlike anywhere he had lived before, and for that he was in love with it.
He noticed her eyes flutter over him and instead of getting flustered he sat there, breathing deeply and took it. He took the opportunity to do the same and tried to decide if she attended the local university everyone else in this town seemed to. He had dropped out of that same school just over a year and a half ago. He was a smart boy, sure, some would say even smarter then others in some aspects, but the school atmosphere was never something that could hold Dylan’s attention. He spent high school holding up his average with English and art classes and failing in everything else. He doesn’t like to admit it, but when he got to University he couldn’t take and decided that some stuffy job in an office somewhere was not for him. No, he was free-spirited and wanted to remain that way forever. He held people who were attending school in high accord, respecting them for doing what he could not, but still those who didn’t attend were just as respected in his eyes.
”Well, everyone’s perception of beauty is different,” he began, responding to her statement. ”Instead of the physical look, I like to look at the morality. The winter is beginning to thaw out and the feelings of spring are taking over. Everyone, including me…,” he pointed at himself and rose an eyebrow. ”…can feel it.” God, he was lame. His explanation was nothing like he wanted it to be but still he nodded as if he was satisfied after he finished speaking. Oh, well, she was just some random girl why did he care what she thought of him?
