He seemed nervous, or was that just her head playing with her? Was he shy? Anna had never really taken time to consider he was not a naturally social person. She had only assumed he was the "bad boy" striking out at whatever moved in his way. Although she didn't naturally put people into categories very easily, Anna had just assumed that was his nature based on one experience. Maybe she was wrong.
He began to pick at the strings, not playing a real song. Her eyes traveled the length of the guitar, taking in the excellent condition and ease with which Teddy handled it. It seemed as though he genuinely treasured the instrument. Most musicians she had met treated their guitars, basses, or even drums as though they had a mind of their own. It wasn't just an instrument, it was an extended element of the musician himself.
When he began to play chords and the picking became more melodic and logical, Anna lifted her eyes and watched him. He still seemed nervous, so she let her eyes drop to his fingers, weaving in and out of the strings with ease. Her ears did not pick up the song, but that was no surprise. At home she knew so much about music and different genres that it was silly. In New York, she was an amateur. She held her gaze on the guitar as the music filled up the small room, echoing off the corners and slipping gently through her ears.

STeddy let his fingers dance across the strings, letting himself get lost in the music. This happened everytime he played, especially with songs he was good at. The intro slowly ended, and he began singing. His singing voice was kind of like his talking voice: deep, and usually quiet.
"We all came out to montreux On the lake geneva shoreline To make records with a mobile..."
Everything else around him seemed to melt away, and all that existed was him and his guitar. Sometimes, he got so in it that he began adding chords that weren't originally in the song. Especially with the song he was playing now. He began doing just that; adding in chords that seemed to fit but the artist, Deep Purple, does not have in it. He was hunched over his guitar once more, his eyes focused on his hands playing the chords and plucking the strings.
"We didnt have much time Frank zappa and the mothers Were at the best place around..."
His voice started out extremely quiet, since he hadn't played ever for Anna yet. Eventually that fear melted away and he let himself get a little louder.
"But some stupid with a flare gun Burned the place to the ground Smoke on the water, fire in the sky."

Pale grey eyes only left the guitar strings to watch the man when he began to sing. Her attention was clearly channeled to Teddy and the song he strummed on the acoustic guitar. He never looked up at her, but she did not mind. The music was relaxing, making her shoulders lower and her back lose it's arch and recline against the metal chair.
Anna never recognized the song. It didn't matter, though, because she would not have dared sing along if she did. She was surprised, though, to hear the words fall from the other student's lips. His voice was not bad -- then again, he was a music major. Although they did not necessarily need to sing, there was probably just a little talent required.
His voice escalated as the seconds passed, and that is when Anna found herself drawn to watching him... his concentration. So often she wondered what she looked like when she was studying lines or practicing her stage blocking alone. She never smiled, even though she was having the time of her life. She put all her energy and all her mind into her work: it was nice to see another artist do the same.
Though she was unaware of it, a soft smile touched the corners of her mouth when he sang the chorus. It was peaceful, and for that moment Anna was far from nervous or fearful. She was relaxed; and, through an artist perspective, connected.

"They burned down the gambling house It died with an awful sound Funky Claude was running in and out..."
Teddy started singing the chorus louder than the rest of the song; that being the way it had been played originally. He felt himself achieving a new level of playing. A level he'd never been at before. It was pretty much the same, just him and the guitar existed. But it was intensified, and it felt completely different to him.
"Pulling kids out of ground When it all was over We had to find another place..."
He didn't dare look away from his hands. He was afraid if he did, he'd lose all focus and this intense feeling would slip away. He never wanted this feeling to go away. For Teddy, there was no greater high than performing on his guitar. At the moment, it probably didn't look like he was having fun. But oh, he was.
"Swiss time was running on It seemed that we would lose the race Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky Smoke on the water..."
After these lines, was a rather long guitar solo with three parts to it. The first part was the beat that was played at the beginning of the song. The second part was an electric guitar rift, which Teddy played of course. But it didn't sound as good since he was using an acoustic. The third part was the same as the first part.
"Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky Smoke on the water."
With that, he finished the song. He held the position he had when he played the last chord. Teddy had to give himself a little time to come out of that zone, and come back to reality.

Anna listened in silence until the strings took their final hum and drew to a close. The final sound lingered in the air for several seconds before finally fading away. The silence was intense. It was almost louder than the sound of the guitar when Teddy had been playing for her. The lack of noise was perhaps the loudest thing Anna had ever heard.
"You have a beautiful voice," she said after a moment. Very slowly she lifted her pale eyes, wondering if he would even be looking at her. Anna was beginning to realize he might be shy. He surely was not aggressive or threatening like she had assumed. Instead, he seemed to be as timid around her as she was around him. With that realization in mind, she added with a warm smile, "I wish I could sing like that."

Teddy slowly came out of his funk, and pulled his head up. He pulled the guitar close to his body, as if hugging it..somewhat. He always treated his guitar as if it was a living thing, and needed praise after doing a good job. His eyes focused on Anna, awaiting her reaction. He was a little nervous, and hoped she wouldn't hate it completely.
He took a deep breath in, realizing that he'd lost a lot of it after singing. "Thanks." he said, and smiled at her. "Mm, I don't really focus on my singing. It's mostly the guitar that I focus on." he added, and shrugged. He'd been told he had a nice voice before, but he never really paid a whole lot of attention to it. If he did, he did. If he didn't, he didn't. It didn't matter all that much to him.

"You treat it like your child," Anna said with a small grin. She had observed his careful handling of the acoustic almost instantly. She knew the feeling. It was the same way she treated her costumes or anything she used on stage.
His smile seemed to make her feel more relaxed, and her shoulders slowly lowered until she even looked more comfortable in her setting. Her grip on her papers eased, and her knees had dropped enough to make Anna lift her chin. Her blue eyes moved from Teddy, to the guitar, and back again.
"Have you been playing long? You're a music major, right?" It did not take long for her inquisitive nature to shine through. Once Anna released her fear, she could jump back into her curiousity almost too quickly. Several people were caught off-guard by her bouncy personality, but those who knew her best said it was one of her best traits.

"It kind of is my child." he replied, and shrugged. He never thought anything of it, and it was odd to think that someone else's opinion of how much he treasures his guitar could actually be bad. That didn't matter much to Teddy though. It wasn't affecting anyone else. "I sure treasure it as one." he added, a little unnecessarily.
His eyes moved from Anna down to his guitar as he spoke. Once he'd said the last word, they moved back up to the girl not so far away from him. He felt something happening there. But what was it? Teddy couldn't put his finger on it.
"Yeah, I'm a music major." he answered, and smiled again. He never would've guessed that Anna would know that. She had been paying attention, that was for sure. Or maybe it was just a lucky guess. It was quite obvious, since he'd just played for her. "And I've played since I was the ripe age of ten." he added. "Teaching myself, pretty much. Until I could get lessons." That's when it popped into his mind. This situation he was a part of with the other person in the room...it was comfortable. Relaxed. Almost natural. Teddy was thankful that it went from awkward to comfortable in such a short time.

Anna smiled and shifted her weight around. She lowered her legs until they were dangling off the chair and brushing the ground. She kept her papers in her hand, but they rested comfortably on her thighs rather than in the death grip they had been in. "I know what you mean," she said with a nod, pulling her blonde hair over her shoulder and idly running her fingers through it.
She was right! Anna quietly prided herself for being correct. Although she had never asked him personally, she was pretty sure it had been mentioned at some point when she was listening. Plus, it wasn't a far stretch to guess if he was sitting in an empty class room playing the guitar. Anna nodded slowly with a smile while Teddy was talking. "I tried to teach myself, but it took like, three months to just learn one song." Anna laughed quietly and shook her head. She was pathetic when it came to music. "What are you going to do after graduation?" she asked curiously.

Teddy looked down at his guitar, still holding it as if it was a little baby in his arms. Of course, it was pretty much the opposite. He almost liked calling his guitar his baby, though. It was like how some other guys call their vehicles their babies. Accept his baby was a guitar. Not much different; at least, in Teddy's mind.
He moved one of his hands to the top of his guitar, and rested it there. His other hand grasped the longer, skinnier part of the guitar. "Is there anything that you treasure like your baby?" he asked, curiously. "I mean, like a baby..." he corrected himself. The first thing he'd asked was, in a way, implying that she had a child of her own. And that was probably wrong.
Teddy closed his mouth, shutting himself up for the moment. Sometimes, when he got comfortable around people, he rambled. It was a habit of his, and he absolutely hated it. Rambling wasn't a way to make a friend. "What do you major in?" he asked curiously, before hearing her speak again. "Three months for one song? Well, that's about how long it takes me to write a song..." he said, and shrugged. It took him a shorter time to learn one, of course, but he was going to leave that little part out. If he had said it, he'd kind of be making fun of her. Another way to not make a friend.
"Graduation?" he repeated, and frowned slightly. It may have looked like the question angered him, but it actually kind of confused him. He'd thought about graduation a couple times, and he didn't know what he wanted to do. The most obvious one would be a music career. But was it worth the risk? Starting a band, you were risking your career. There was a big chance you wouldn't end up succeeding. Maybe he could become a songwriter though. Evelyn had plenty of feedback on his lyrics, and it was mostly all positive. Of course, she did have some productive criticism, but he liked hearing critisicm. It would only make himself better as a songwriter. "I don't really know actually. I mean, there's the obvious...but yeah, I dunno. Do you know what you wanna do?" he asked, hoping he actually didn't look angry.

If there was anything Anna knew how to do, it was chatter. She was capable of rambling on and on until the moon fell and the sun rose in the morning. Talking was her specialty, and she could go on for days. It was no surprise, then, when Teddy began to chat that she eagerly responded back.
She pondered the first question carefully. There were several ways to answer this, because she treated most of her things like children. She didn't hesitate to consider how funny his original question had sounded. She skipped right around and went straight to thinking mode. "My costumes..... and my iPod," she added hastily with a nod and a frown. How could she ever forget something as important as her music?
"Theatre," she said with a smile. She loved theatre probably as much as Teddy loved his guitar. It was her passion. It fueled her from day to day and kept her on her toes. "Do you ever perform your songs?" she asked after a moment of silence. She didn't want to answer all of his questions without at least asking some in return. It was rude, and Anna always made her best effort to avoid such a description.
When he repeated her question about graduation and frowned, Anna bit her lower lip. Perhaps that question had been too personal to throw out in the conversation so soon. He began talking again before long, sparing the young woman any nervous trauma that might have ensued. She nodded when he said he wasn't sure. She understood that very well. "I bet there are several jobs available for music majors," she said with a reassuring nod. "If not performing, then helping with everything else." There was more to a performance than just the band on stage.
He phrased the returning question in a way that pleased Anna. It wasn't what was she going to do, it was what did she want to do. A nice touch, she thought to herself. With a shy grin, she said, "Broadway." It was always Anna's dream to make it to that big stage in New York City. Now she was taking the steps necessary to get there. It was still a long shot, but at least she was a few steps closer than she was before. "Or Off-Broadway. Or Off-Off-Broadway," she added with a thoughtful frown. "One of the three," she said after a minute, lifting her pale eyes and smiling at Teddy.

Teddy awaited her reply patiently, as he continued to drum his fingers on his guitar. He wasn't trying to rush her or anything, it was just a habit; to fidget. Even with the people he knew and was very close to, he still fidgeted. He didn't even realize he did it anymore.
When he heard her reply, he couldn't help but smile. An IPod was for music. So, just because Anna couldn't play music herself, she still treasured music. 'Something we have in common,' Teddy noted. No, it wasn't exactly the same. But close enough to be an interest they shared. "Your costumes?! You must really love theater, then don't you?" Personally, he didn't really like the concept of moving around a stage as a different person than yourself. But he couldn't really talk since he'd been to his fair share or plays and enjoyed them.
"No. I don't perform my own songs." Wow, he felt like he'd been saying this a lot lately. Since he had no social life whatsoever up until Rutherford, it was odd for him to answer the same question over and over again. It was a fair question though, so he answered. "See, the reason why I kept questioning if you heard my lyrics," How could he word this would actually giving it away? He wasn't ready to share something like that with Anna yet. "Because I keep them private...I write about my life in my lyrics. And...well, I don't want to share my life with people I don't really know..." So he pretty much gave it away. Teddy had never been one for words.
He nodded, as his mind went back to graduation, and what to do afterwards. "Yeah, there is. I'm just not too sure yet." he said, and shrugged. It was an honest answer. He had not a sniff of what intrigued him. Whether he actually want to be public; a face of a band, or behind the scenes. Or maybe he wanted to stay away from the music, and keep it as just a hobby? Oh, so many choices.
Teddy smirked a little, when she spoke about Broadway, Off-Broadway or Off-Off-Broadway. "Well, if you tried hard enough I'm sure you could work your way through all three." He couldn't really say that he was sure she could make it to Broadway. He hadn't seen her act yet, and wasn't in the position to say something like that. He was always one to think about what to say and how to say it. Not just promise things off a whim, and not be able to fulfill them. Not that this would be one of this situations that he could let the other person down, by saying something on a whim.
