Anna's eyes narrowed thoughtfully at his response. She twisted her lips in a sort of puzzled way, not entirely sure what to make of his comment. Maybe he didn't want to discuss his fridge. She could understand that - she wasn't a particularly good home appliance conversationalist. Then again, she had never really had such a discussion with anyone, but there was not really a point in starting now. Especially if the man didn't want to talk about it, which was the impression Anna received.
"I see," she said, her tone polite in return to his response on his grade. "What is your major?" she asked curiously, her friendly nature attempting to peak through the original hesitation she had presented. The man did not appear to be hostile or frightening in any way. He was strange, yes, but Anna wasn't going to dismiss him on that ground. She could probably be odd herself from time to time.
"I'm Anna Sophia, by the way," she added with a cheery smile and extended hand.

He shook her hand.
"Business."
If he was going to guess, he was going to say her major was....either psychology or theatre. She certainly wasn't attending medical school, that was for sure. She didn't look like math was he strong suit, either. Actually, wait, backtrack. Math was probably her strong suit over all, but she got good grades in English because English is pretty much a cakewalk. As long as you meet the criterion for each assignment, you're set. It's such a subjective subject that for them to grade you any other way would be unfair.
If you wanted to see Captain Ahab as Jesus, then go ahead, who's stopping you? Who's the authority on that shit? No one. His assumption about math aside, she didn't look like a science person either. He wasn't sure how Rutherford's science program was anyway. He was going to bet that she had fairly impressive grades, and was pretty mind-blowingly amazing in something by her school's standards. Like, she did outstanding amounts of community service or something.
Only time would tell though. He could have very well been wrong.
"What about you? What are you majoring in?"

Anna cringed at the mention of business. She could never imagine going into a field that was so tedious... so prim and proper. Where was the fun in business? A naturally creative and innovative person, Anna might actually succeed in the business world if she tried hard enough. But she had no desire - none at all. Dressing up each day in a suit and tie had nothing on theatre. Nothing.
"Theatre," she said with a smile and upbeat tone. "With minors in creative writing and political science, though. I figure one minor should be at least a little bit logical," she added with a bland shrug. Although Anna enjoyed political science, it was not her first love. You could only get so creative with a government research project.

"How are those relative to one another? I mean, I understand theatre and creative writing, what about political science?"
Somewhere in the world there was an explanation for that. Political science had to help her understanding of the written word, or something. Wouldn't it make more sense to minor in something like English literature? European literature? To broaden her horizons? To make her understand what she would potentially be acting out? Maybe not. Maybe she wanted to become a politician. That would be a very interesting turn of events.
Theatre would help her...be, you know, more political. Maybe she was a genius. Using that logic, actually, that's an ingenius plan. You learn more about how to fool people than politics itself, because when you get to the bone of it, the fact of the matter is -- politics is easy. It's persuading people that isn't. Or maybe her minors and major were a coalescence of things that just didn't really fit.

"I'm planning to take over the world." The seemingly flat nature of this man was touching on Anna, making her use her own smothered humour as she watched him with unlaughing eyes. It was actually not very difficult to keep up, seeing as his expressions were not exactly animated. Even so, though, a smile began to play on her lips until she looked away to keep from laughing. She never carried a dry sense of humour, and that fact alone made her little joke funnier than it really was.
Anna casually let her fingers stray to the display table, idly examining a few of the cameras while she chattered. "No, it just seems more reasonable to have at least one normal minor. I mean, as normal as political science can get," she said with a shrug and nod that suggested he might agree. "And government was one of my favorite classes in high school. It just seemed to fit."

"What really defines normal though?"
He had thought about this. He'd thought about this a lot. What defines normal? Is it statistics? Is it the dictionary definition which was 'expected'? Is it what you can see? Is it what feels best for you? Of course it isn't what feels best for you. That's happiness, or comfort. Who said that normality was automatically comfort? What is the definitive for normal? Is normal what everyone else is doing or is normal what everyone expects you to do? Is normal what the sane thing to do is? What is it?
When he was a kid that was all he thought about. What was normal and what wasn't. It was so calculated. Name brand cereal was normal. Having a dog, one of the following lab, beagle or poodle, was normal. Nurturing a goldfish at some point in your young life is normal. Having an over all average of B+ and above was normal. Blue, green, and white shirts were normal. Black shirts were only normal on some occassions and rugby jersies were always acceptable. You didn't wear loafers unless you were in a position where it looked like your mom forced you to wear them, and when in those positions you should always wear loafers so it didn't look like you had some sort of absentee mother. You were some sort of athletic footwear anytime else. Mostly tennis shoes. Never wear cleats or anything. I mean, aside from ruining them, who does that? When attending parties your parents are privy to, wear something they picked out for you. When going to parties you and your friends are knowledgable about wear what you would wear to school, if you went to public school. If you didn't go to public school, the same thing applies - use your imagination. Make sure it's something no one has seen before though. Possibly reserve that outfit as your "party clothes". Play a sport every so often. Play basketball with your dad on Sundays, but don't let it get in the way of potential plans. Just let people know that every few Sundays you play basketball with your dad. Never let school get too much in the way, but don't ignore it either.
There was a whole host of rules he had thought up. "What are you going to do with that? Your minor in political science that is."

She laughed a little at his question. "Good point," she said with a sly grin, wondering how to respond to something like that. Perhaps he didn't really want an answer, but it was a good thinking point. Normality was such a twisted and intangible concept. "The common standard," she said after a moment. "Theatre isn't really a praised norm." She chewed her lower lip with a frown the more she thought. "English, psychology, education..." she said finally. "Those are normal."
Anna lifted her shoulder in a casual shrug, returning the small camera she had been admiring to the desk where it belonged. "Pretend it is useful, I suppose." She really had no idea what she would, or even could, do with a political science minor. It wasn't like she ever wanted to get into politics. Government might be an interesting class, but the reality of it was shattered. There were too many headaches in politics.
"Are you minoring in anything?" Anna fiddled with the end of her sweater, needing something to do with her hands if she couldn't observe any of the other cameras on display. She fidgeted constantly, no matter what she was at. It was a horrible habit but one that would die hard. If she ever gave it up, that is. Unlikely.
